Dr. Ngozi Akabudike

Ngozi Akabudike, MD is a well – recognized orthopedic surgeon and upper extremity expert delivering world class care in the DC/Maryland/Virginia greater metropolitan area. She is fondly known by her patients as Dr. A.

She is a practicing Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in the Hand and Upper Extremity. She is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. She is additionally Board Certified in Hand Surgery with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand.

As the founder and Director of Greater Maryland Orthopedics LLC, Dr. Akabudike provides comprehensive Orthopedic Upper Extremity care to persons of all ages. Her approach to health care focuses on personalized care for the individual patient. Complex issues are made simple and she takes the time to truly listen to her patients.

She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology / Neurobiology and Physiology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She then earned her medical school degree from Cornell University Medical College. She received her orthopedic surgery residency training at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY which is the #1 and top ranked orthopedic hospital and residency training program in the United States. She furthered her training and education by completing a fellowship in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery at the Cleveland Combined Hand Fellowship Program at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Akabudike started her career at the University of Maryland Department of Orthopedics. She was actively involved in patient care across a wide range of patients, from pediatric patients to the elderly and a variety of ailments including acute and posttraumatic orthopedic bony injuries, tendon and ligament injuries, arthritis and nerve injuries to name a few.

Dr. Akabudike has extensive experience in treating sports injuries of the upper extremity. She was the primary Hand and Upper Extremity consultant for the University of Maryland College Park and University of Maryland Baltimore County Collegiate Division I athletes, in addition to intra mural college sports, and local elementary school, middle school and high school athletes.

She was directly involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education; teaching medical students, residents and fellows at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, University of Maryland System Hospitals and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She was a core member of the orthopedic resident hand rotation for the residency programs at University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Akabudike participated in both basic science and clinical research, resulting in multiple presentations, medical journal publications, book chapters and research grants. She has given orthopedic talks locally, nationally and internationally. She serves on the editorial boards of Orthopedic Journals.

Dr. Akabudike has provided multiple local orthopedic talks in the general public community and consistently volunteered at local public-school career day events.

Dr. Akabudike also served as the Medical Director of the University of Maryland Ambulatory Surgery Center. She was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She currently serves as a Member on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Akabudike has received multiple accolades and awards. She was nominated and voted by her peers and medical staff as “Physician of the Year” at University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute. She was awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the 2017 University of Maryland Orthopedic Residency graduating class. Most recently, she has been nominated and voted a “Top Doc” by the Baltimore Magazine in 2019 and 2020.

Dr. Akabudike has chosen to transition from a stellar career at the University of Maryland Department of Orthopedics to create and found “Greater Maryland Orthopedics”. She will continue to deliver outstanding care in Orthopedics, Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery.
